Established on 28 December 1974, Singapore Baptist Convention is an association of Baptist Churches sharing like-minded passion to work together to fulfill the Great Commission of the Lord Jesus Christ. By bonding together we enjoy the warmth, encouragement and support of an extended family empowering us to widen our outreach and deepen our impact in nurturing and growing our churches for God’s glory.
Singapore Baptist Convention celebrates 50 Years of “God’s Faithfulness, Our Fruitfulness” on 16 November 2024.
In commemoration of this Golden Jubilee, SBC will be organizing a number of special events for the Baptist community, namely the ‘First Baptist Symposium’ on 16 November 2024, followed by a Grand Dinner Banquet in the evening. We look forward to a time of fellowship and celebration of our shared journey and the blessings of half a century of Singapore Baptist Convention!
What makes us Baptist?
Our Baptist Distinctive provides biblical convictions on what we believe and how we function, patterned after the New Testament church. It does not differentiate us as better than our evangelical brethren. Rather, the Baptist Distinctive, the result of a well-grounded biblical and theological reasoning, defines the organic and inter-relationship of our convictions. It is a clarion call to hear and obey the voice of our Lord Jesus Christ through the inspired Scriptures, affirming the Protestant Reformation principle of sola scriptura – the Bible alone is the supreme source of authority for the faith and practice of the church, and seeking to glorify God in everything that we do.
Baptist Distinctive helps Baptist churches to be faithful to our theological heritage and appreciate our founders for their faith, courage and spiritual insight. Without our Baptist Distinctive, the essence of our Baptist identity and the foundation of association of Baptist churches are weakened and our endeavours to advance the gospel are severely hampered.
Our Logo
Our logo captures the essence of our Corporate Mission:
Three horns represent the clarion call to come together to proclaim the Gospel to the ends of the world. In three different shades of blue, they are joined to represent our unity and common mission beyond the local autonomy of each member church. The three horns also represent the tripartite cooperation of Pastors, Lay Leaders and Church members working together as a team.
The cross at the apex reminds us that our mission and ministry must always be Christ-centred.
The blue colour of the logo represents water and is synonymous with baptism by immersion.
Our Baptist History
Baptist work officially began in Singapore in 1937 with the organization of the Overseas-Chinese (Swatow) Baptist Church in Singapore. By 1949, the Overseas-Chinese (Cantonese) Baptist Church was established. By 1970, the Baptist Family in Singapore had grown from two churches to eleven churches and one chapel.
The “Singapore Baptist Family Story – 1970-2000+” written by Russell A. Morris is a well-documented and detailed account of the various Baptist churches and their development in Singapore from the 1970s to 2000s.
