“This is how we know what love is: Jesus Christ laid down His life for us. And we ought to lay down our lives for our brothers and sisters. If anyone has material possessions and sees a brother or sister in need but has no pity on them, how can the love of God be in that person? Dear children, let us not love with words or speech but with actions and in truth.”1 John 3:16-18 (NIV)
Based on June 2019 data from the Ministry of Manpower (MOM), there are about 1.4 million guest workers residing in Singapore, of which about 285,000 work in the construction sector. Most live in purpose-built dormitories (PBD), or factory-converted dormitories (FCD).
The rampant spread of infection of COVID-19 among guest workers staying at these dormitories has become a major national crisis of enormous proportion- one that threatens not only their livelihoods, but their health and safety as well.
The Singapore Baptist Convention is partnering with the Alliance of Guest Workers Outreach (AGWO), an initiative of the Hope Initiative Alliance (HIA), in order to sow care for our guest workers by providing timely practical and holistic help in their hour of need.
Sowing Care: 3 Initiatives
The Convention is actively collaborating with AGWO by rallying our member churches to volunteer help through the following 3 initiatives:
Adopt an FCD
A church (or a cluster of churches) can ‘adopt’ an FCD by underwriting the costs of ‘Care Meals’ (consists of 2 meals a day for one person) during the Circuit Breaker period, and providing manpower to collect (where necessary) and/or deliver the Care Meals to the dorms, from Monday to Sunday.
Standby Delivery Service
Volunteer to drive, collect and deliver ‘Care Packs’ (face masks, hand sanitizers, soap bars, etc.) from a designated collection centre to the FCDs when called upon to do so.
Give generously to the ‘Sowing Care for Guest Workers’ fund through the Singapore Baptist Convention. Designated donations (marked as ‘Sowing Care’) will be used wholly for this cause to pay for Care Meals and/or Care Packs.
How to Volunteer
Contact the Convention office to find out more information on how you (as an individual or as a church) can volunteer your help in Sowing Care for Guest Workers.
